I’m on a course but want to leave

Hi,

I'm currently on a course which my work has paid for externally to complete. I my work life has become very stressful and has become a negative environment to work in. I haven’t signed anything regarding paying the course fees back if I leave early. Can they make me pay the course if I leave early?

I would make you pay back the course fee as a manager. Employer has invested in you......

Talk to your employer before taking any action you might later regret, however attractive quitting looks right now. If you leave the course early but hope to stay with your employer, simply waltzing off the course without consulting your employer isn't going to do your career prospects any good. If you are planning to leave both course and employer, handling it as well as you can will maximise the chances of a decent reference.

As to paying back the course fees - check if your contract, employee handbook, any e-mails re the course etc cover the possibility that you may have to repay.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

You can't unless there was agreement in place beforehand a manager can't just make that decision on a whim

agree but I would record it during their appraisal as a negative.

Record it on what appraisal?  They are leaving so any appraisals are a waste of time.  I would hope a manager would have better things to do that undertake pointless task such as that.

I would give them a leaving appraisal and a reference to reflect it - not pointless!

How on earth would you MAKE them?  If they haven't signed anything then you simple can't MAKE them.
If you gave a reference saying they left during a course then what difference it would make?  I'd have read that on someone's reference and not given it a second glance - op could even mention it during interview if he wanted to bring it up beforehand.
We used to do an Exit Interview, but they were just as TELLIT01 states 'pointless' and we ended up having better things to do with our time.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Don't think the OP was saying they would be leaving the company. I think it was just the course that they wanted to leave.

that's what I thought the OP meant.

The OP should get a poor appraisal if the course is required by the employer (knowledge and skills). A worse one if they don't offer to pay part of the course fees. I would not be happy as a manager.
