I purchased something online (perfume) on 26th December 2020.

Retailer didn’t ship until 4th January.
DHL are now chasing for duty/vat
I have emailed explaining I purchase Pre-Brexit but they said as the sender didn’t post until 4th jan, I’m liable for the tax
can anyone confirm the rules on when tax is payable Pre/post Brexit? Is it on the purchase date or the shipping date?

It is the shipping that creates the liability, so it must surely be the shipping date (no doubt those who know more than me about this will comment if I am wrong).1
