On a Chinese mower with a cheap retailer's own-brand slapped on it? I'd be surprised.

Purchased a generator from Argos cheap brand on a half price sale, I was totally shocked to actually find one in stock.
Thought half price deal is because they do not have any, anyway that came with a Briggs and Stratton engine also.
Maybe they have a budget range made down to a price with a shorter warranty etc? Always starts first time but the supplied
battery lasted about a week. Just use the jump pack or pull cord to start it.

Just take it to the main dealers. It may require a software update. Only they will have the necessary equipment.

I’ll book it in at the main dealers (Argos) asap;...the MOT is due next week so it needs sorting urgently.

Is it a diy job?... or best left to a service centre? ...I’m not too bad on the ol’spanners , but these days not if it’s very complex, over fiddly and time consuming.

Certainly on the usual Briggs and Stratton type engine most often used in mowers -
Its neither complex, over fiddley or time consuming
Its a very simple job to take off and clean the carb - should be no 'challenge' at all, if you know one end of spanner from the next  - no more than 20 mins
My mower has a B&S 4-stroke, and the carb does seem particularly fussy about its jets getting blocked.  I have to agree - if you've got some basic DIY experience it's not difficult to remove the carb and blow through the jets.  I'm no master mechanic, but it always seems to do the trick for me.

Any carbureted  engine will object to blocked jets.
Lucky it's not a two stroke, as blocked jets are a recipe for a seizure - four strokes are more resilient to a dodgy fuel/air mix.
Regular occurrences are down to poor air or fuel filtering, neither should be hard to fix.

Check for air leaks, including where the carb attaches to the inlet

I had a similar issue with my B&S engine, after some investigation it turned out the small rubber diaphragm in the carb. had worn. However I got a complete new carb. of 'tinternet for a tenner..
