Few hotels inspire you to redecorate your entire house but The Double Red Dukein Clanfield, just north of Faringdon, might be one of them. It started life as a 17th-century coaching inn, but now, having been subject to a complete refurb over lockdown, the 19-room boutique hotel is undeniably dashing with open fires, wood-panelled snugs and chic dining rooms awash with foliage.
The food comes courtesy of head chef Richard Sandiford, who, incidentally, has The Hawksmoor on his resume, so expert meat cookery is certainly in his skillset and many dishes on the menu include an element of open-flame cooking. Need more? Well, there’s a tiny spa in a shepherd’s hut outside, all using local 100 Acre products, and the immediate area is so beautiful, it was often used as a backdrop for Downton Abbey.
