Applying weekend rota to Christmas day

I work for a company which provides clients with 24 hour coverage. A small group of people have a rota for weekend coverage. For working the weekend there is additional pay for that weekend. For special days (e.g. Christmas) offices are closed and coverage is obtained by asking for volunteers, and coverage will normally be for a specific time period - e.g. 8 hours, and there is enhanced pay over and above weekend coverages, This year Christmas is on a weekend and management have advised that as it is a weekend the normal rota is required to be worked for the normal weekend pay. Is there any recourse here

Is the pay enhancement due to public holidays or is it some sort of local agreement? You may find the pay uplift is applied to the PH's Mon/ Tues.0

What does your contract say?0

What's happened in the past when Xmas has been a sat/sun? ?0

My old workplace (public sector) applied weekend rotas and conditions for Christmas and Boxing Day that fell on a Saturday and Sunday, with back holiday pay and conditions applied to the specified public holiday replacements.
Indeed, government website states that neither the 25 or 26 Dec are back holidays. They’re the following Monday and Tuesday respectively. https://www.gov.uk/bank-holidays0 -
No recourse
I worked rota for many years , Christmas at a weekend was normal rate , Monday and Tuesday were bank holiday rate ( and other premium supplements )

The Saturday and Sunday aren't Bank Holidays surely if Xmas falls on a weekend so not sure why you'd be expecting to get an enhanced rate for working a standard working day0

Thanks for responses so far. Normal working days are Mon-Fri, offices are closed on weekends and that is extra cover. Christmas has not been on weekend so far. Trying to dig out my contract0

There is nothing "special" in employment law about Christmas Day (or indeed any other bank holiday). Any special treatment will be a contractual matter or have evolved by custom and practice.MickeySmith said:I work for a company which provides clients with 24 hour coverage. It certainly has - most recent was 2016, so unless the company is very new, they will have met the situation before.MickeySmith said:Thanks for responses so far.
