Difficult employee that no manager wants

Events have turned out quite bizarrely - 4 weeks ago another person in the office resigned and this person was asked to cover their role until a replacement was found.oh_really said:Whats the state of play with this op?
Then 2 weeks ago I was asked to come in early and see my line manager whom told me that my colleague whom didn't want this person working for them had resigned with immediate effect and the person was going to cover his role on an interim basis and someone else then cover the role he had been covering.
So I've been working alongside this person for the past couple of weeks now and probably for the next couple of months which so far hasn't caused any insurmountable problems.
If the company chooses not to give this person the role on a permanent basis then I imagine it will be largely down to myself to decide how this person is deployed going forward.

Or this person will look for another job after getting knocked back.
Why are they good enough to cover, yet not good enough to get the role? Are they not confident, not answering the actual questions asked or expanding on answers during interviews?
Perhaps you could spend some time with this person and help improve where they're falling down.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.2 -
Yes ironically my line manager interviewed them for both roles and turned them down for both instead bringing in 2 external candidates both of whom have now exited the business as he had no other options.MovingForwards said:Or this person will look for another job after getting knocked back.

He's now had to go back to the original person to see if they would cover the roles in the interim which to be fair they've agreed to as it suits them. There's no prospect of this person getting the jobs again as my line manager has already started advertising externally.0 -

That is a not uncommon scenario. One person leaves and the company needs somebody to cover their work, but that person often isn't even considered for the role on a permanent basis. Where my wife worked a manager left and one of my wife's colleagues covered the role for over a year before it was advertised. She asked if she could apply for it and was told she didn't have the required educational qualification i.e. she wasn't a university graduate. She then asked how she had been able to do the job effectively for long and didn't get a decent answer. She left shortly after.

@Ella_fella nothing to stop them applying for ielt, regardless of it being an external advert.
@TELLIT01 I've seen it happen many times, experienced it a couple of times and that's why I only apply 2x after that I'm out the door and in to another company.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.1
