Being messed around in new agency job?

some of you may know by my other recent thread I was made redundant a few months ago from my retail job. Have landed a new temp job in an office doing 'data entry' (something I've always wanted to do) started yesterday but already I 'm annoyed. Was told I would be doing data entry, so naturally I'd expect to be working on a computer. Instead all I've done for the last 2 whole days is sorting envelopes into piles and empty the bins. I was expected to sort them out today into sections without any training. Which I know is admin related but is very tedious and not what I signed up for. I had the induction on Friday along with 3 others who have been doing the same as me, told we'd be trained in data entry eventually. Yet another new group had their induction yesterday and were trained this morning! Plus one of the managers is someone I used to know but never got on with, who hasn't even bothered to acknowledge my presence yet despite being in the same room. Not really sure I can stomach the rest of the contract.

    I'd stay with it for now.  You wanted to change career and this is a step on the way.  If it is through an agency, you will get on better with them if you stick with it for a while rather than walk out and then they can find you something else where they will be able to say you've had a data entry job through them.

    It's an agency job, you have to be prepared to do crappy tasks outside of the job spec, that's life.
  • Training doesn’t really happen anymore, it is just to get your through the door as a sales pitch of an interview or job advert. Keep going, I hate just listening to answer machines for a strong 8 hours 6 days a week with nowt else to do in what could be considered a ‘not real or long term’ job but nearly 4 weeks on I’ve been contacted about another job in Admin order processing and really to have just got into a routine of going out to work each day with the appointment making job suppose has been better then nothing) here’s hoping it will be the right challenge. Can only try.

    You've been there a whole two days and are already throwing your toys out of the pram...have you any idea how boring data entry is, or how pressurised? Lots of jobs are very tedious - but it's a job and it pays.

    Have you acknowledged him?
    Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

    If you are only there for 6 weeks no one is going to spend much time training you  you will spend the time doing low skilled work

    It's just so depressing and a massive come down from my last job which had a lot more variety and kept me on my toes. I was practically at manager level. I will try and see the 6 weeks out but after just 1 week already I'm depressed and still haven't been trained in what I went for. Just doing the same rubbish a trained chimp could do. I knew data entry was never the most exciting thing in the world but thought I'd enjoy it.

    A couple of options:
    1. Tell the agency to find you something else;
    2. Tell yourself you're getting paid £x ph while thinking and making plans for yourself while stuffing envelopes and emptying bins.

    It's grunt work, but it's also money.
    Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

    Feeling physically sick at the prospect of another week in an open plan office doing extremely monotonous work. Also my social anxiety is kicking in working with 25-30 people in an open plan office.
