"Cooking for the 5,000 - loaves and fishes stuff"

Quite some time ago now I scanned a cookbook that had specifically been written for cooking for loadsa people - it was written in a format where the ingredient quantities were given in 3 or 4 different quantities - along the lines of whether one was cooking for 4 or 20 or 50 people (that sort of idea anyway).

It was wholefood as I recall and probably vegetarian (unsure on that).

I could probably get hold of a copy of it through Amazon.

Anyone know its name/author

and/or similar websites?

Thanks

Thank you D&DD for taking the trouble to have a looksee.

The info I am looking for - as I recall - is of healthfood and vegetarian-type recipes.

I have - so far - of myself spotted Hare Krishna recipes - as in I was very grateful recently for a vegan plateful of free food from them when I needed some sustenance and was wondering where I could get hold of dinner from. So they are obviously one resource for cooking for crowds. (thanks guys if you spot this)

I am thinking along lines of food that is health food and meant for vegetarians and/or vegans and reasonably-priced obviously - if I am going to lay on dinner for the masses then I am thinking more along lines of 50p/£1 per head than £5 obviously - not being made of money (I wish!)

As I recall the Diggers (back in the '60s) - whoops showing my age here! - gave away loadsa free bread - so off to investigate there too.

    Thanks again.

    All suggestions welcome.
  • Veggies of Nottingham were the caterers who supplied my first taste of vegan food. They catered for several hundred of us for 4 days under extreme conditions (we were marching on Aldermaston) that the organisers were able to supply all of our food and lodging for £25 for the 4 days gives you an idea of the budgets involved. They have produced a pdf for mass catering - it not only gives recipes but loads of advice as well - I hope that it helps

Can I ask why you want these - are you planning on setting up a field kitchen?

Thanks for that - useful to have advice as well.

Not a field kitchen - more like large social gathering type stuff.
  • IN my copy of "Living More with Less" there is a section on catering for large numbers and they were mostly adapted from the More with Less book.

Once you get over about 20 people, you actually need less than you think - I think the general idea is for 50, cook for 40; for 100, cook for 75 etc.

Last year I bought a cookery book (second hand from the Oxfam Book Shop) produced by the Tibetan Buddhist Centre 'Kagyu Samey-Ling' in Scotland. It was published in 1987 - the author is June Buleigh. It contains a range of recipes - some of which give you the quantaties for 30, 40, 50 and 80 people as well as the standard recipe sizes.

I can't spot a copy on line, but it might be worth looking at Buddhist Centre recipes?
