Help please - newly self employed sub-contractor

Hi - any advice on this woud be greatly appreciated...
I was made redundant last year and so went self employed and soon got tied to a building firm who supplied me with a van and consumbles provided I had tools and could do the job in hand.
I've stuck with this situation for 3 months and frankly I am being exploited and seriously cannot live on the money they pay - plus my health and homelife are suffering as a result of the unreasonable expectations of this firm - long hours and hard work for peanuts leaving me with no time or energy to seek alternative employment.
Maybe I'm not cut out for the job. But despite being on the brink of bankruptcy I simply have to quit this job.
I'm currently on an week off (unpaid so my anxiety is through the roof), intending to use the downtime to sort my life out.
I'm seriously thinking about leaving this firm right now to try and make it as an independent tradesman.
I have found various carefully filed documents (I'm fairly organised in this respect) but don't seem to have a contract for current "employer" who I'm sub-contracting for.
Long story short - can I leave right now with zero notice? Any advice on this or more generally how I can get back on my feet and sort my life out would be massively welcome.
Thank you!

Yes you can leave with zero notice if you are self employed. Are you paid weekly? In arrears? In that case I would give a week's notice to ensure that you get everything you are owed.
