Hi All,
I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is any truth to reports that receiving payments from friends with rude or inappropriate references can cause issues when applying for a mortgage? It's something I find fascinating as you can't help what other people send you, I would understand if it was you who were sending the dodgy references but as a recipient would it affect you?
Just something I wondered for future reference.
Will defo be careful in the future when sending mates money lol

Don't use things like loan, wonga and other things relating to lending or payday loan names as that will cause issues from what members have experienced.
I think it was @ACG who popped up a few of the things he's seen on statements, but I don't recall him saying if they caused problems.

Where are these "reports"? As above the only "inappropriate" reference would be one which suggests it's e.g. a loan or criminal activity (though I'd hope anybody with sense wouldn't assume drug deals go through the banking system with an obvious narrative!).1

I was receiving payments for a hotel for a stag do and my idiot friend decided to us ethe reference "stag b****es, amd another in his infinite wisdom put "no money no honey"
Obviously jokes, albiet stupid ones but not something I have control over. Have spoken to them about it since.
They can call me what they want to my face lol0 -

Unless it says something about loaning money then it will simply be smirked at then ignored
I could write a book with the ones ive seen over the years. 'sexual favours' is always a popular one between partners6 -
I had a couple on my statement where I sent money to my mum named "loan".
Basically, I lost my debit card over Christmas and there was a ridiculous delay (2 weeks!) getting a new one issued. My mum gave me cash (couple hundred) to ride us over during that time and then I paid her back via direct transfer. Explained it to the mortgage advisor and everything was fine😊1 -

Funny as I replied to this on Twitter when I seen it a couple of weeks ago - https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/expert-warns-sending-your-friends-20347240
We see it all the time. Underwriters are human, so I would assume unless you put something really offensive or risky you are going to be fine. I have seen things like "services rendered", "to the (another word for female dog)" (worryingly this was to his mum!), Cocaine supplier and a few others - its never been an issue. I suspect if you put something like Donation to some sort of terrorist organisation it might be a little different, but in the main people just ignore them.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Haha. I have to admit, this crossed my mind as I’m always getting a telling off from the wife for transferring her money with rude references. Not the same thing, but once on a road trip I was filling the car and she went in to pay the young male cashier. I stopped the meter on £69.69.... she came out red faced and didn’t speak to me for 10 mins or so 🤣1
