Reduce Council Tax

I have made improvements to my house since moving in four years ago including wall and loft insulation, double glazing, solar panels etc., and therefore believe I should be in a lower council tax band.  However, the Council tells me that I will not be able to change Council Tax Band until I sell the property.  So the new owners will reap the reward.  Is this so?

You can only challenge your Council Tax band if you have lived in the property six months or less. However, you can still contact the valuation office with evidence of why your band should be changed and ask them for a review. A colleague of mine did this some years ago and was actually put in to a higher band because of the improvements and extension to property!

If you have made improvements to your house why do you think you should be in a lower CT band?

Your band cannot be increased on account of improvements you have made, that can only happen after the property has been sold. However it is doubtful that the improvements you have made so far would lead to a higher CT band.
