Lost mortgage paperwork

Please help. My parents believed their Woolwich mortgage paid 17yrs ago. Barclays took over at some point. Now trying to move home it appears they owe a tiny amount still.
There is no paperwork!
Barclays ask for the mortgage account number to start closing it down. They have no idea and are terribly stressed now.
I called Barclays mortgage team but despite trying it still came down to the unknown account number.
Can anyone help please?

If Barclays think there is a balance then surely that means they've got an account still open for them?0

In the old days leaving a small balance was the normal thing to do. I think it was to do with leaving the account open if you wanted to borrow again and they held your deeds free of charge.
I believe I still owe £1 on mine.
They should have the account no as said abovemake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
