Kids share of the house!

Advice please? I am divorcing and remortgaging to remove ex’s name from mortgage – we have 2 grown up children. I am worried that if I meet someone else they will be able to claim ½ of the house. I have made a will stating the kids will get ½ each but is there anything else I can do like a solicitors letter? Thanks

😄

I'm no expert, and given what's at stake I think it would be well worth you getting proper legal advice.
However, I'm sure I've read that if you met and married a new partner then this would affect any existing will you might have.

If you remarry then your new wife will gain rights to your assets (as you will to hers) if the marriage lasts a few years.
There are ways to protect some of your estate but you couldn't give it all to your children and leave her nothing or very little.
If you do get serious with someone, it would be worth getting legal advice - solicitors are used to helping people with issues like this.

My amateur understanding is that there would be little risk to the children's inheritance if the OP didn't re-marry, but I agree it's a subject for formal legal advice.

Further complications will arise if the OP finds another partner and has another child with them, married or not.  I've no idea if that's within the OP's planning horizon, but such things do happen.
