in Cutting tax
Hi All
My Wife retired in Nov 2020, we have two P45s for her income one from her employer and one from the small pot pension she took.
Her total income from employment and pension is £13073 and she has paid £690 in tax which is more than her income (£573) above the £12500 PA.
I looked at making an online tax reclaim but I could only choose 'Income from Employment' or 'Income from Pension' Not a combination of both to cover everything.
Do we have to make 2 separate claims or is there a method to make a combined claim?
should we phone the tax helpline rather than make an online claim?
Some guidance on this would be appreciated.
cheers

It doesn’t work like that! Tax due is based on total income. So, declare both sources and tax deducted thereon to claim what I calculate to £575.40 overpaid.0

Hi Purdy
Thanks for your reply.
So at the beginning of the online reclaim process I should choose 'Income from employment' and at some point in that process there will be a chance to declare income from other sources?
I understand that total income is the important factor but I have never used the online system before and did not want to complicate the process at a later date by making a mistake at the first step.
Thanks

I have looked at this and can see what you mean - one cannot select more than one source.
However, regrettably, it doesn’t seem to matter! Try choosing one source. You are then asked to choose the appropriate tax year on the next page. If you choose 2020/21 you are greeted with a message:
‘ Your tax has not been calculated yet. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will post you a P800 tax calculation between June and October if they work out you’ve paid too much tax. The P800 will tell you how you’ll get your refund’
Looks like you will have to wait (unless you are in self-assessment)1 -
Thanks Purdy
I appreciate your help
Cheers

A P50Z might fit the bill.
Claim a tax refund if you've stopped work and flexibly accessed your pension - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Claim a tax refund if you've stopped work and flexibly accessed your pension - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)- you’ve had a one-off lump sum pension payment (Trivial Commutation or small pots) - use form P53
I have never come across either form before - good to know!1 -
