Train set scenery

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I wondered if anyone knows of any way of making realistic looking scenery for a train set? (Similar to those you can buy in the shop.) I have looked at buying packs of figures and buildings but they are quite expensive in the long run. Thanks in advance.

small scale childrens farm yard sets usually have some trees in them as well as the animals.0

My boys all play Warhammer and get a lot of scenery building stuff from the Games Workshop but they too are on the pricey side for some stuff.
Ebay is a great source try looking on the warhammer listings for flock and suchlike to build your own its surprisingly easy as there are sites online that give you detailed plans too.I'll ask the kids in the morning what they recommendI know they bought a packet of trees and bushes off ebay a while back..
Mountains etc can be made out of flour and water paste and newspaper then just painted over as can tunnels, you can even buy stone effect papers to make them more realistic HTH Dee X0 -
D&DD "you can even buy stone effect papers to make them more realistic"
I could look in my local DIY shop for small samples they would make good effects.
I did have a look on ebay and found a lot of cheap items but a lot of sellers seem to want a lot for postage, which when added to the cost of the items made it more expensive than new in shop!!!0 -
Thats a good idea I love free samples
Must make a note to myself to have a cruise round the local DIY shops
Don't forget to visit the wood bit for offcuts which they often give away free;)
Yes the postage on Ebay is terrible sometimes especially when the stuff is so light!
OH says he thinks they got a few bits from The Works as well, special papers, cheap glue and suchlike.
Brillo pads are also useful as bush coatings and sand is great for paths..sprinkle a thin layer onto pva glue board wait for it to dry then stipple in colour wanted, use 3 different tones of colour leaving each coat to dry between.0 -

When my dad had his model set in the llft, when I was little, we used to have to eat LOADS of graps because the stalks make such good tree trunks:rotfl:Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

When we were kids we had a train set that used to run all round the attic and villages and scenery including hills and stuff. We used to paper mache on chicken wire and mould into shapes and used to get bags of sawdust from the woodman and dye different colours to glue down for grass and fields.Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0

If you are creative, how about getting some FIMO modelling clay and making your own bits? When my daughter was younger she made me all sorts for the top of my Xmas Cake, such as a Santa, snowman and prezzies. FIMO can be obtained from any art/craft supplies shop and comes in a wide variety of colours0

Hiya
I just bought myself a train set ...it was a full Hornby set at a bargain £40 for new!! (in the end my family bought 4 in total......the Argos staff thought we were mad). Those in the know will know how amazingly cheap that is.
Anyway, I was in my local Focus that is closing down and I thought that might be a good place to go to get bits and pieces for making train set scenery, at a discounted price?
