Registering for Self Employed but not Sole Trader

My son needs to register as self employed. He doesn't have his own business but does work for gardening landscape companies, but he's not employed by them.

I'm confused by the HMRC website as to what he has to actually do to register as self employed as it talks a lot about being a sole trader but he's not. Does he simply need to register for self assessment and that's it?? Or is there some other online form he needs to fill in to say he's self employed but not a sole trader?

Perhaps use HMRC employment status checker before doing anything.

Is he actually self employed? If so he would be a sole trader, but it sounds like he might actually be an employee whose employers are trying to dodge their responsibilities.

  • I did do the status checker and it says he's Self Employed. Is there such a thing as being Self Employed but not a Sole Trader?

Working in a formal partnership (with one or more other people) would be an example of self-employment but isn't as a sole trader.  That doesn't seem to be what your son is doing.  And being a sole trader doesn't mean you work alone - you can be an employer.
