Son's (he is a student) tax code is 1070L - why?

I wondered if anyone had any ideas as to why my son, who is a student, has a tax code for this year of 1070L? Why doesn't he have a standard personal allowance. He doesn't have any investments etc that need tax paying on and his earnings from a part time job don't take him over his allowance, but puzzled as to why it is different...... he hasn't had a tax code notification from HMRC.
Just noticed that last tax year the codes used were 1077L and it changed in month 8 to 1063L, now it is 1070L.
Any ideas welcome. :-)

You only lose some personal allowance if your adjusted net income is > £100k.
He will have a deduction for something in his code reducing his tax code allowances.
But unless he earns more than £10,709 it won't have any impact on him.0 -
he hasn't had a tax code notification from HMRC.
It looks like they wouldn't send one to him when there a change but no tax is going to be deducted

Hi - he earns about £3k a year - and yes, the change doesn't impact him at present, but curious as to why and HMRC are a complete nightmare to get through to. I'll ask him to register for the online service in the meantime.Dazed_and_C0nfused said:You only lose some personal allowance if your adjusted net income is > £100k.
