Paid way too much tax ??

Options
Evening all,
I am hoping someone out there would be able to advise please?
Having just checked my pay slip ahead of been paid on the last working day of each month I have noticed my tax code is D0.  Last tax year I was not on the higher tax band as didn't earn that much but did work for 2 different companies across the tax year:

2020-2021 Tax Year (P60)
Job 1- Gross was £17.8k paying £2.9k tax running until July 2020, was in that job for years and previous gross salary was £44k per year.
Job 2 - Gross was £13.2k paying £750 tax running from Jan 2021 to current month

2021-2022 Tax year im expected to earn £62,000 before any salary sacrifice detailed below

So April 2021 pay looks like this:

£4,887 Gross - have salary sacrifice Pension & Cycle To Work
£1,954 Tax Paid - way too much, if i was to multiple that by 12 i would be paying £23k over the year.
£   421 NI which looks right

I was expecting to pay in the region of £900 so paying £1,954 is a massive shock.

What do you think has happened? and what would people advise?

Thanks very much for reading.

D0 means you pay the higher rate on your entire salary. Which should not be the code if you have only one employer.

I would ring HMRC to question your tax code.
  • The most likely scenario is, somehow, the fact that you have left your previous job has not be relayed to or acted upon by HMRC. Accordingly, you are deemed to have two employments.

Check your online account to see or telephone HMRC - 8 am is the best time.

I agree with the advice above.  If you can speak to them on the phone it's better.  At the present time there do seem to be unusual delays processing the online forms (normally very quick IME, but currently taking weeks).
