Covid WFH tax relief when under the personal allowance

Options
I am currently working part time due to childcare so I am under the personal allowance and therefore not paying income tax at the moment.

I am married so have signed up for the marriage tax which transfers my unused personal allowance to my spouse.

I have applied for the covid WFH allowance at £6/week and was notified my tax code will be changed.

Will my husband then benefit from this, as its essentially a personal allowance increase?

Unfortunately not. It isn't a personal allowance increase. It is a claim for expenses.

Marriage allowance transfer doesn't transfer your unused personal allowance either. It transfers 10% of your personal allowance only (whether it is being used or not), it does not transfer 10% of any other reliefs.

Nor can it transfer more or less than the 10%, it's 10% or nothing.

  • Will I get a payment then instead? Money is really tight right now and I claimed because I needed money!
  • If you aren't paying any tax then no, you won't benefit from the WFH allowance.

No you won't, unless your employer will pay your expenses.

Tax relief is £1.20pw for those of us on lower incomes. If you're not earning enough to pay tax, there's nothing to have tax relief on.

Are you claiming all the benefits you're entitled to?

  • I have all debts on 0% cards, all benefits I'm entitled to etc but the increased gas and electricity from WFH is an issue

It would reduce your income for the purposes of tax credits, UC, HB etc.

You don'T GET £6 a week, you get tas relie of 6 x your rate of tax payable. For a basic rate tax payer that is 6 x 20% -£1.20 a week less tax paid.

If you are not liable to tax then your rate it 0% and you get 6x0 =0
