Buying back Pension years HMRC - National Insurance

Hello,
I worked in the UK [1990 to 1996] and subsequently worked after that in Ireland. I requested to buy back years from the HMRC and was allowed to buy back from 2006/07 to current period, which I did.
Query: wondering about the years between 1996 and 2006, can I request to buy these or is there a reason why this period was not made available by the HMRC?
Thanks
John

You can only buy back the past 6 years but with the introduction of the new pension a special dispensation was made to allow buying back 10 years pre April 2016, so back to 2006-07, until April 2023 treating them all as 2016-17 for the 6 year rule. In short, no, you can't buy pre 2005-06 years.
