Pay scale compressions

So understandably my employer has had to cancel pay talks until later this year. They have however increased the lowest grades pay to NLW which just happens to be the exact amount I earn in the grade above. My employer tells me that unfortunately this is just the way it is for the time being and that this is the same for everyone nationally working for the company. Now I accepted that until I saw my company advertising for my exact same job role in 16 different locations each for varying amounts but all greater than NLW! How can this be?

Sadly - that's how the world works.

Unless your role specifically states that you will get x£ or x% above the grade below you - nothing you can do about it

We had that in the NHS a couple of years ago - the lower grades were given a much bigger pay rise that the higher grades causing a similar compression.

It will get to the point where people wont want to take on additional duties and responsibilities as the "uplift" in pay doesn't adequately reward this

Are all or any of the other locations within Greater London where wages often have a premium added due to the cost of living?  All you can do is speak to your manager and show him the evidence that other people, in the same role as you but at other locations, are not on NLW.  Do so politely but be prepared for nothing to change.
