Debt and fearing bankruptcy

Hello I'm in such a mess and don"t know where to turn.  6 years ago we moved to France and had about £30,000 worth of debt.  We had a DMP and was paying around ,£500 a month.  We run into difficulties and stopped paying the DMP aboutb 4 years ago.  To cut a long story short we had to move back to the UK in July due to brexit as we didn"t  have sufficient money to live there.  Needless to say most of the debt collection agencies have found us and are chasing us for payment. My husband says to ignore them as we lived out of the country but I have offered to make small payments which they have accepted for now.  My husband has just been offered a job but he has been told he has to have an Experian background check which I"m sure he will fail.  Again my husband has his head in the clouds and thinks it is just to check who he says he is.  This was requested a week ago and I'm worried as we have had a very stressful 4 years and he will fall to pieces when he gets the rejection.  It is a job that I know he will be good at.  At the moment we get Universal Credit and I have set up a small business working from home which is still in it"s early stages.  I"ve got MS and have a child in school so this suits me.

I know we have to face up to our debts but don"t know where to turn.  I haven"t looked at our credit file.  I"m embarrassed and ashamed.

You have probably set up bank accounts and maybe other financial products at the address where you now live - hence your old creditors were able to find you.

So doing a credit check would not give them any information they don't already know and you should do that - it will help you to make informed choices going forward.

I suspect that your husband's credit check will not be as bad as you fear.

As for what to do about the debts - all the options are open at the moment. I know you have posted on the bankruptcy board but that may not be the best one. Why don't you do a statement of affairs and post on the debt-free wannabe board?

Is it possible that some of these debts are statute-barred?  If so, starting to make payments again is shooting yourself in the foot in a big way.  You need to talk to one of the debt charities as a matter of urgency and certainly before you make any repayments.

It doesn’t sound like it; they were all being paid up to four years ago and are being paid again now.

OP, your husband seems to believe that if you have lived abroad that your debts are unenforceable, but that’s not the case; spending some time away doesn’t have any effect on what you owe.
