Longer timescale when using a broker?

Applying for a 95% mortgage with Coventry at the moment. Have an AIP after they have run a hard check on the credit files.
Speaking to my broker today, he says it'll
likely take 6-8 weeks but their own website says currently 14 days.

Is he just being pessimistic?

The only way it would take longer through a broker is if they are sitting on your documents before doing anything.
It should be the same timeframe regardless of whether you go direct or through a broker.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Maybe the broker is building in expected delays based on knowledge of your case.
The timefame on the website is an average as well. For every case that takes 48 hours there will be another that takes a month. I just had a case take 3 months to get offered by a lender. I didnt do anything wrong, they just kept asking for more and more paperwork that they didnt ask for before. And then the valuation came back low and i had to select a new product that had different fees so we had to wait a week for that to work its way through the systems.
If i told all my clients I expected an offer within the week then id have upset people on the phone in the 2nd week. If i said it might take a month but get it in 2 weeks then everyone is happy1
