Guarantor for an online course

Options
My granddaughter who is 19 asked me to be a guarantor for a loan that she wanted to take out for an online course, I agreed as she is in permanent employment with the NHS.  Unfortunately, after two months of doing this course she felt that this was not for her and wanted to change her career direction.  We have both emailed the course union and the reply that we have got back is that because my granddaughter is out of the 14 day cooling off period there is nothing she can do.  I have spoken, also, to the loan company and they have said that it is not down to them but up to the course provider.  So, what do I do?  Is there anyway that I can come out of this agreement because, basically, my granddaughter is paying for something that she is not using.  Thank you

Which is only your granddaughters fault - Not the course organiser or the loan company.

Make sure she keeps paying the loan or it’ll come back to bite you and there will be nothing you can do to stop that.

Based on the fact that no refund is due  -and although it's not for her career direction - wouldn't there be a benefit to completing the course anyway as it's now been paid for?

Unless there is something in the agreement from when she signed up to the course about being able to cancel at any time, then I think a change of mind is not a reason to be excused from her commitment. She needs to keep paying.

She is not using it by choice. If she bought a car on finance and decided that she didn't want to drive it, she would still be liable for the payments....I don't think universities refund tuition fees for those that choose to drop out either.
Do you believe she is likely to stop payments leaving you to be chased as the guarantor?
  • Many thanks for your reply, and no I don't believe that she will stop her payments, put it this way, if she did I would never do it again!!
