DAB Radios

Hi,
I'm after some opinions on DAB radios. I am thinking of buying one as a christmas present this year for my family, but don't know a lot about them.
This is the one I am looking at: http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500000701&langId=-1&searchTerms=5133013

I checked out the coverage for my area at https://www.digitalradionow.com as it says to do on the Argos site and accourding to that it says that we are in the "amber" area for all the stations listed meaning that "you are fairly likely to receive these stations, but may need an external aerial for best reception."
So now, I'm not sure if I'll be wasting my money buying a DAB one. Should I just stick to the normal radio?
The one I use at the moment has a lot of interference in picking up the station I'm most likely to listen to and I thought DAB may be a better option but I'm not so convinced after reading that.
Any ideas for what I should do? Feedback from DAB radio owners would help make up my mind. Thanks. :D

  • Hi Oasis,

This is my first post. My boyfriend and I went to buy a digital radio at Curry's and they did a search to check our coverage using our postcode and they said we would be unlikley to pick up many stations in our area and then proceed to show us a few radios around £80 - £100 which is much more than we wanted to spend! We decided to buy one from Argo's for £24.99 (It may be the one your looking at but I can't view your link) with intentions of returning it if we couldn't pick up any stations. We can get all the stations and I'm really pleased with it. No interference or anything. Hope this helps.

Get one from Argos, be careful with it (e.g. try not to take any stickers off it, use your own batteries), test it, take it back if you can't get good enough signal. That's what I've done twice over the last couple of years.

laine, thats interesting how they said you were unlikely to recieve the stations and yet you haven't had any problems with them. It's definately given me something to think about. I think I will risk it and buy one and as you and stugib have said I can take it back if it doesn't work

ormus, I have seen some Roberts ones, they are nice, and sleepali, the one you linked too is a nice design too but I'm really after a micro system with everything in because the old one we have is on its way out!

Thanks everyone. I think I will give digital radio a go after all!
