Questions on bank statements

I have read from a few long running threads on here that questions are asked from bank statements. What type of questions are asked?
Is it?

Why have you transferred £20 to someone for cakes twice this month?

Or why has someone transferred you £25 names baby smith ( for a baby gift)

why has someone transferred you £500 ( refund from a cancelled birthday cottage)

Why do you have a union sub?

or am I way out?

I personally never got asked any questions on my payments. I think they are going to more question payments such as £100 going out each month to a Ladbrokes gambling account.

If you're talking about a mortgage application, generally they'll be looking for evidence of (regular) financial commitments you haven't otherwise declared - one-off payments, or a £40/month cake habit, are unlikely to be a concern.

I was asked what my direct debit to boots was for (contact lenses), a direct debit from my partners account, a large credit from my partners mum (a gift, not part of our deposit) and to clarify my loan payments.

Thanks all. I am so nervous that I will get asked all sorts of questions.
  • Depends on the lender. It can go from not asking anything, to only wanting to see wages coming in, to asking minute details.
I got asked about magazine subscriptions and payments to parents on a recent application that was only 40% ltv and 2x income

Depending on the lender and your income/deposit they might be concerned if you live in your overdraft and spend every penny you earn each month and more.
If it's complex case ! Various sources of income and say more than one mortgage or BTL mortgage, then your mortgage broker will have lots of questions to ask about your lifestyle and expenditure.
I was asked how much I spent on a haircut, any expensive hobbies, loans, Self assessment history etc

Got a mortgage offer from Nationwide this week.

Only had to provide 3 months payslips. They didn't ask for bank statements at all.
