Unknown Debt - Cabot Financial

I’ve received a couple of letters from Cabot Financial requesting payment of an outstanding debt from a credit card. I have no knowledge of this card or debt. (The debt is over £4500!)

2 letters were just about how to set up a payment plan and to contact them but the 3rd had a table showing 3 payments of £1 made to the account via giro in October, November and December 2020. Obviously this wasn’t me?!
This letter only stated the account number and when it was opened (April 2007) but no proof it is mine.

Do I send the Prove It letter?

Am I right in making contact with them even if I know this isn’t my debt (nothing on my credit file) - or should I just ignore them?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, they are. It is missing my middle name though, not sure if that makes a difference!

Think you need to find out more about this debt, specifically who the original creditor is. If you have not made a payment towards it or acknowledged the debt in a 6 year period (5 in Scotland) then it is stature barred and there is nothing they can do about it except send letters every now and then.

RE the £1 payments, do you have any debt management plans that may have made these payments or did you sent off any CCA requests recently that they have sneakily assigned as a payment to stop it becoming stature barred?

Would try bring this to a close sooner rather than later, last thing you want is for Caboot to attempt to get a judgment by default by issuing a claim to an old address.

You should write to Cabot stating the debt is not yours, although you appear to share the same name as Joe Bloggs, you are not "the" Joe Bloggs, in question, this is not your debt, and you did not make the aforementioned payments.

Have you recently moved at all ?

How did they get your address ?

Just struggling to see how they have traced you, and connected you to this debt.

No debt management plans, no other debts bar the mortgage. We moved to this house 2 years ago.
I have quite a common name so wondering if they are just fishing.

If I send a Prove It letter, hopefully they’ll end it, as I’m sure this debt isn’t mine.
Just a concern about the £1 payments made by bank giro.

It doesn't take much to get a mis-trace, despite the credit services association saying that it doesn't happen.

Keep an eye on your credit files in case you are being linked to another individual who shares your name.

Thanks. So do you think sending a Prove it letter is the right thing to do?

I think you should write along the lines sourcrates suggested.
