Paying online via bank transfer?

in Cutting tax
Im a mum trying to help her son who is in debt, caused basically by the upheavals of the pandemic.
He has an tax bill owing, about £1200 ( was self employed at the time covid lockdowns began). I have had a hypothetical discussion over the phone with an HMRC assistant re paying his tax bill in increments. I aim to split it to 3 payments over 3 months. The gist of the conversation was I'd have to get his permission to access account and esp over the phone , verbally. Thats fine, i have his UTR number from previous discussion.
I intended to just pay via my online bank account which will ask for Acc number, Sort Code , amount obviously with a reference number. Will it be sufficient, if this is being sent to the HMRC account in Cumbernauld, to put the reference number as his UTR number or is that just too little info? Is it better/safer through the HMRC website?
It may sound odd, i just want to pay the monies in, and say to him , it's done, without a long drawn out discussion. He has previously applied for a loan , which he was told eligible for, to cover it all but im thinking its been refused and now since working long hours in remote area that has little or no phone /internet access hes struggling to get it sorted . Likely getting more stressed and worried trying to do it all himself without asking or accepting help.
