O/S Daily Thursday 8 April 2021
This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning
Morning everyone
Gers - thinking of you and your mum x
Hugs to those that want/need them, those who are poorly and those who are looking after a poorly person x
Happy birthday to those with a birthday x
Now getting light, dry underfoot, but cold start to the day.
DH up and gone to work stupid stupid early, I'm enjoying my first cuppa and will shower shortly. DS1 will be getting ready for work shortly. DS2 settled and happy.
Dinner last night was herby chicken with pasta in a creamy carbonara sauce with a side of baked bread roll. Not sure what we'll be having tonight - will organise something today. I have several chores on the "to do" list so those need attending to.
Now on days' off and hopefully next week will know more about the situation at work. Both myself and DH are then off for a week's leave the following week - we both can't wait.
Keep safe and well x

Morning all
Thanks for the thread nmlc and hugs to all those in need.
I need to collect a prescription today, not long now until we leave.
Steve had two phone calls yesterday from friends who want to meet up which will be nice for him.
Have a good day everyone.

Good morning, and thanks for starting NMLC. Glad to know you'll be getting some info about your work situation, you must be fed up with it.It's grey here, possibly a bit less cold, yesterday was so cold it was painful. I wish it would warm up a bit.We had a busy day at DD's,and she managed to drop a whole brick on the edge of her foot, her little toe has gone purple and black and is very painful, I think it's broken. Looking on the NHS website there's not a lot you can do except take painkillers, strap it to the next toe, and rest it .I'll try and persuade her to keep it up today and I'll do what she was doing. It's mainly shovelling brick bits into bags now, for Dh to take to the tip.DP1, are you another one with hair problems, I could rip mine out I'm so fed up with it, Boris Johnson's hairstyle has nothing on mine.Next Thursday is the big day!Csarina, that quilt seems to be giving you a lot of heartache, you're right not to attempt any more large quilts. I've seen some of your quilting when you used to blog, and it's beautiful, but if you are pulling muscles and having to unpick long seams it's no good.Hope everyone is ok and has a reasonable day.Thinking of Gers and her mum, and others who are not well or struggling with life.Take care folks13

Morning folks and thanks NMLC. Hoorah it feels marginally warmer this morning with no sign of frost or snow. Instead we have mizzle.
I'm another almost suicidal with my hair. No matter what I do to it doesn't look any better. Me and my buddies are all booked for Monday for our mobile hairdresser to visit. When Boris first announced his road map back to almost normality she rang us to see if we wanted booking in before she was inundated with calls! I have kept up to my skunk roots and will tackle them again on Sunday in readiness for the big day!! I can't wait!
The Friday Tidy is being brought forward to today as we will be busy tomorrow at the caravan site, transporting stuff to the new static The Bailey is stuffed full of all the contents of the awning and most of it will be surplus to requirements now. Goodness knows what we will do with it all.
Have a good day folks if you can and ((HUGS)) for our poorlies, sad or worried. Thinking of GERS and DM and MARIE as always. Take care x

Good morning folks. It's so much warmer here today, it may turn out nice.Hair cut mania! You'll all feel so much better once all the growth is gone. I had mine on Monday and immediately cheered up.The visit by the domiciliary optician was a great success. One optician and one assistant arrived with enough baggage to fill a small room. They were both so lovely, chatty and professional too. All the tests were done so thoroughly I was impressed. At the end DM's eyes haven't got any worse, she needs reading glasses and to use her Hylo Forte six times a day. New reading glasses are now on order. I've also ordered a new anglepoise lamp as the ancient one doesn't stay in place anymore. The optician told me to replace the bulb as it was the old filament type so was getting too hot for it to be close - that was easy to do as I had a stash of LED bulbs already. The two women work mainly with the house-bound and care / nursing home patients so are really comfortable dealing with the difficulties of it all.DM was exhausted by it all and slept all afternoon and the refused an evening meal again.Once they had gone I nipped out quickly to take away the smelly bin bag and collect an order from the local PO. It's a funnel so that the upcoming task of emptying more oil into one container will be easier. Then it was back to emptying out packets of dried sauce powders and granules plus the 12 bars of cooking chocolate, much less messy than other stuff. Now there's the jars of dried goods to clear and the bottom shelf (the floor of the cupboard) with more assorted oils and vinegars. This morning I'm meeting my friend Alan for an al fresco breakfast - I'm so looking forward to it.Thanks so much for all the good wishes, I reflect them all out to those who are in pain or sad. Happy Thursday to all.10

Morning All
What a great service Gers, glad it went well. Enjoy your breakfast.
Ouch to your DD's sore toe Scarlet.
Happy haircuts, I did message my hairdresser but will have to chase her up as she didn't get back to me. My hair isn't too bad as long as it doesn't rain, it's a bit unruly when it's too curly - hairspray is the way forward!
I had a trip out to Home Bargains to re-stock the toiletries yesterday, such excitement. I also bought a load of stuff I don't really need but a couple of covered seed trays made their way to my trolley so spent some of yesterday sowing veggie seeds. I had a hour tidying up in the garden but it was far too cold to stay out for long.
Nothing planned for today but may take the little one out for a walk but it's a bit damp out this morning, hoping it cheers up later.
I bet you can't wait to get into your new caravan TA, I'm sure you will be able to sell on all the bits and pieces from your old van.
Hugs to those in need, has anyone heard from Marie? If you are in touch with her please send her my love.
Have a good day, take care. XX9 -
Morning all. Well, I did cut the grass [green bin now outside], made cassoulet [bloody lovely and made dents in storecupboard], made some tangerine/grapefruit jam with the citrus that would have turned otherwise [have to boil it again, it's just too runny] and washed saucepans too big to go in the magic cupboard. Shoulder started playing up after that so sat down. I will be sitting down today as well but learning at the same time, more free online courses from the nsbrc. Yesterday felt unprecedently busy but I did have fun bopping round the kitchen and singing my head off to a playlist. Cats weren't amused though, I think I hit notes most people have never heard of. And I must buy a battery still.Scarlet, ouch, feet up and rest day today for her! Enjoy your breakfast Gers. Nelski, your poor paws...can't help but have a virtual covid free imaginary hug. Snoozer, thanks for explaining quilt terminology
I've made patchwork freehand quilts in the past and to get round having to put batting in or even doing it properly, I'd use a fleecey blanket or similar for the backing. A few judisciously applied stitches and they both stayed in place. But I am not bound by the rules of proper quilting so what I did is probably very much frowned upon. Yours are beautiful though. Hope you feel OK today camelot. AOD, conitnued shoulder commiserations. Nanny, I hope you're enjoying your week. Right, off to set up the learning table and laptop. Hope you ll have a day chock filled with unexpected nice surprises...

I've got a cut booked on Monday as well. Trying to decide what to do with it because I've had it very short with a side parting for years and I'm fed up with it so it seems a pity not to take advantage of the new length. It's a good colour because I haven't gone grey yet but it's baby fine so i becomes limp very quickly, I've found lately that using far more blow-dry spray than normal is helping to keep the style in better.
Good news last night, the specialist nurse from Addenbrookes rang to cancel this morning's telephone appointment with Steve, That was because there was nothing untoward on the CT scan and his latest bloods are fine so sighs of relief all round. We think it might have been a longer reaction to the vaccine, maybe because of the meds he was on.
Anyway, it wasn't the only medical thing because he's off to Moorfields to have his retina scraped this afternoon. Under a local so he won't have to stay very long, Chris is picking him up and I'm going to Laura's for the afternoon. I can't wait to see Esben.

Morning everyone
I think it may be a bit milder here today - there's no frost on the ground. Spent some time with my dad yesterday morning - we placed our bets on the Grand National on Saturday. I chose one of the lady jockeys so we had our usual conversation about how a woman will never win it! When I was a little girl we always went to my granny's on a Saturday - she used to give us all 10p to bet on the Grand National and my dad would go to the betting shop. I won 3 times with Red Rum. She never had a bet on any other race, but we would all watch it together, shouting at the TV for our horses to win. She did love the wrestling though and we watched that together too.
The tradition continued with my girls, by then it was my dad who put their bets on. When I had little one there the other day I said 'tell great grandad a number' and she shouted out 2 - so she'll get a pound bet on number two....the tradition continues.
He does occasionally point out that he pays for all our bets, but doesn't mind really!
So little one will come today at some point and stay till bedtime - we'll probably have a play outside.
I still feel achy but perhaps not so tired this morning - I contacted my doctor yesterday and she agreed it's probably a reaction to the vaccine. I'm pleased to have been off work so I've been able to rest.
I'd better move myself - hope everyone has a good day

Good morning everybody, hope you are all well.Gers, enjoy your breakfast- I'm sure it'll do you good to have a little break. The optician ladies sound lovely. I've just found a pair of glasses (intact)on our walk across the park on the grass so I put them on top of a bin and hope someone finds them. It's definitely a bit warmer here today, no ice or frost on the grass and it rained in the night. No plans today, nothing exciting anyway...I intended having a spring clean at the start of the week, started with the downstairs loo, & bathroom upstairs, shredded some papers, got distracted and that was it
Then I thought DH will be traipsing in & out at the back if he carries on with laying the new flags at the weekend so that'll be mucky - better leave it for now
I collected DGS from his Mum's house yesterday afternoon. He's on a football camp all week and had just been dropped back off by his friends Mum- talk about mucky! Not sure how he managed that because it was an astro turf pitchI'm making a chicken & chorizo tray bake for tea tonight, it has fennel ,red onion and sweet potatoes on it too. Found the recipe on mailonline and the men seemed to enjoy it last time.Right enough waffle from me,good wishes winging their way to those who need them, inc. Snoozers Steve for his eye op.X:heartsmil 'A woman is like a teabag: You never know her strength until you drop her in hot water'. (Eleanor Roosevelt)12 -
Morning, Hugs if you need one. Good news re your Mums sight Gers.
So re the quilt of doom. As many of you know I have made some really big quilts in the last 25 years. I decided a couple of years ago that I would not make any more big quilts but stick to things like play mats which are roughly 36 x 36 and not too difficult to get through the machine. I had made a play mat for Niblet which he has been using to cover himself when he has a nap at Nanny's. (DD1') he asked me if I would make him a bigger one with construction vehicles on, The fact that I had embroidered 6 vehicles to go in the middle blocks, dictated the size of the quilt 5 x 12 inch blocks across and 6 x 12 down, hence the size of the quilt. It will fit his bed. I tried every which way to get it through the machine but it is just too cumbersome and heavy, hence the decision to get it done on a long arm machine. I have found a lady who lives in Leicester and does some really lovely work, so it is going to her. I am not making any more big quilts even if I am begged to. my physical condition will not let me..
Phew..... cold morning but there are signs of a very weak sun. DB will be out to the garden now the very cold wind has dropped. I need to continue deconstructing the quilt and pressing it ready to go of.
I really need to do a compete freezer audit of both freezers, I need to do a click and collect for Aldi next Thursday, I have some meat, need to know just how much and what.
Coffee at the little chapel was nice. It was good to see some old friends we had not seen since the summer. We were all socially distanced with the windows open. There is another one a week on Wednesday. We used to have just one a month, but B has decided to increase them to the first and third Wednesday of the month.
Supper tonight will be something made with mince, I got a container of mince out of the freezer yesterday. I may stir myself to make a creme caramel for dessert.10
