Reclaiming petrol costs on apprentice income

Hi there,

a little advice please. My son is a 2nd year apprentice, age 20. Since covid his employer has asked him to use his car for work and he pays 20p per mile. My son hasn’t earned enough in the last financial year to pay tax so I don’t think he can claim a rebate. Does anyone know of any other scheme or way of recouping his costs,as paying these costs means he doesn’t even earn the £6.45 per hour min wage.

thanks for any help.

The only other way would be to ask his employer to either pay more or provide a car.

Inform the employer pay is too low to afford business insurance uplift, and as above provide a vehicle.

Business insurance uplift is normally zero or a minimal charge.

Mid policy and the insured's age, I doubt it.

My statement still stands regardless, employer provides transport.

Thanks everyone, employer won’t provide vehicle or pay more I’m afraid.

So how is your son expected to work?  Not every 20-y-o has a car.
