I just re checked on the food reference website it states

they are named after the capital of Belguim where is thought they were first cultivated.

this question was also on eggheads or weakest link this week so i`m sure I was right :beer:

A quick google, and most sites said Belgium, a couple said somewhere in the East - Afghanistan & area


They were certainly named after Brussels Belgium but whether they originated there I don't know
