Child's rent and board

I left home and started work at 15 years old. My Mother always worked on the thirds principle, applied to take home pay but allowing for travel to work expenses.
One third for board, one third for savings and one third for spends/clothes.
This always worked well with me and my two brothers. I applied the same rates to my own children which they always said was fair.
While I was still under 18 years old my Mother used to insist on seeing that I was sticking to the savings rule and I did and have always been grateful to her for this.
