too much onion in soup!

Afternoon

In my bargain hunting trip to asda the other day i bought 2 of their leek&potato soup kits for 10p. Not exactly OS i know so for those who have never seen them they basicallly contain chopped veggies and a stock sachet - cook veggies in a little oil, make up stock with water and simmer for 20mins. Anyway, according to the packets i should have 8 portions of soup for 20p which is a bargain in my book!

BUT - its cooking now and the whole place stinks of onions!! Possibly they have go stronger as the packs were 1 day out of date

So i have 2 questions...

Is there anything i can add to the soup to make it less oniony?
How can i get of the smell in the house (i have people coming round later  )

  • Too much onion? Is that possible? Sounds great too me. Not sure what you can do about the smell though, I'd just open a window and let some fresh air in.

    Hi findingmyownway,

Well done on your bargain hunting. :T

It's not onion but the leek that you can smell and that's what will make your soup taste delicious. I think if you add a knob of butter when sweating the veg it makes the leeks taste less oniony but that could just be me. I'm certain once it's cooked it will be delicious.

To get rid of cooking smells I bring to the boil and then simmer a half water/half vinegar mixture in a saucepan for about 20 minutes and the smell usually disappears. As HappyIdiotTalk says, if you have a window in the kitchen try to keep it open while cooking too as that helps too.

Get rid of the cooking smell & clean the microwave at the same time! Microwave half a lemon in hot water for a few mins.. Wipe out the micro, a doddle since the lemony steam cleans it and I find it freshens the kitchen too.

Taste the soup once cooked, I bet it's yum, but if too overpowering, add a spoon or two of double cream? I keep Elmlea around, long dates and often on offer, esp at this time of year.
