Microwaving jacket spud

Can you bake a potato directly on the rotating glass shelf in a microwave,e or does it have to be on a separate microwaveable plate?  All the recipes indicate the latter, but I don't really see why it should be.

Reason for asking is that I'm booked to stay in a room where there's a fridge and microwave provided, but as I remember from last time, no crockery etc.  I don't particularly want to lug a china plate around in my backpack on a touring holiday, although I always carry kitchen roll, so could I wrap it in that and put it straight on the shelf?

No problem - just stab the spud several times - put on the usual glass plate - enjoy

Excellent, thanks.  I do take a plastic plate to eat off, but didn't want the weight of a dinner plate.

I would use the kitchen paper, it could save a difficult to wash up plate plus you can't be sure what the previous resident has put in the microwave!  Many plastic plates etc are suitable for microwave use too.

I would be more worried about what might drip off the roof of the microwave onto said spud -- clingfilm is your friend

I agree about using kitchen paper for the hygiene aspect but no problem cooking directly onto the glass turntable. I always cut a cross in the top of mine then it's easy to squeeze open with a tea towel or the kitchen paper for the topping. I like cottage cheese as a topping if you didn't want something hot like beans. Enjoy!

Why not lug around a collapsible plastic tub with a lid. Your food can then be cooked and eaten in this.e.g like these.
