Charged twice for a pair of shoes?!

Options
Not sure if this is the right thread - but here goes:confused:

About a month ago mother-in-law bought a pair of shoes for f-i-l and paid by card. The lady at the till said the card would not go through (even though there was money in the account) so she paid by cash.

Her bank statement has come through today and the money HAD been taken from her card.

They marched back down to the shop with the receipt which showed a cash sale on it and explained the situation. They spoke to the manager, who in turn spoke to the lady who had served them a month ago.

The sales assistant can remember m-i-l from a month ago (not) and says she definitely payed by card. When m-i-l said it shows a cash sale on the receipt the manager said all sales show a cash sale regardless of how they were paid.

So basically is it tough luck?! They are not budging, despite several phone calls and a visit to the store. Paying by cash is imposible to prove isn't it?

  • Hi - I work for a bank so hopefully can help. Your MIL needs to contact her bank and ask for a visa dispute form. She needs to complete this and the bank will take it up on her behalf. The shop would have had an over on their balance that night so she should get her money back! HTH

If she had truely paid by card surely she would have had to sign something or put in her pin, can't they check their records and this will prove that she didnt pay by card?

Hi, I work in a shop and if a customer ever disputes anything we can always prove if they are right or wrong. There are records of every sale and these have to be kept for a minimum of 12 months by law, the till wouldn't have necessarily been up because 2 sales went through the till so it will be the stock that is wrong and this won't show until there is a stocktake. Even if the till isn't computerised there will be an audit till roll so however the till works there are records of every sale. Hope that helps you x

If it is a chain bypass the manager and talk directly to headoffice. What absolute nonesense to say a sales person can remember how someone paid a month later (unless she paid in pennies or with a very unusual card). Does make you wonder if "overs" go into pockets if they are so quick to deny without checking properly.
I'd talk to headoffice and if you still get nowhere or it is a one off store dispute the charge with Visa and let them handle it.

I had a problem with vtech.com just before christmas last year. They charged my card twice for one order. I was with Natwest at the time, and the times of the transactions showed up. I called them and they denied it was possible. I told them the date and the times and they said they had no way of tracking down transactions. I argued that if I had the times and date they had taken the money, they must have similar information to check. In the end I (and several other customers from MSE) had to prove they had taken the money twice, by sending (scanning and emailing) the bank statement that showed the transactions. They then begrudgingly refunded the money.
    It was a nightmare.
