fan oven query

my landlord has asked if i'd like a new fan assisted oven in the kitchen, a built in one, as my current one is ANCIENT!!

i'd just like to know if these are better than normal cookers, as i like to bake a lot of cakes, pies etc, and i'm used to my old cronky one!! would i just cook things for a slightly shorter time in a fan oven?

Cooks more quickly if you use the recommended temp or reduce the temp (I think the standard is -20°C) and they cook for the same amount of time. Oven temperature is more even throughout the oven so can load up all shelves and they'll all be ready together. Great for baking and all other cooking!

Basically, take 10 degrees of the recommended oven temperature, and 10 minutes off the cooking time.
They take a bit of getting used to, but once you have, they're as easy as other ovens. I love mine!

If somebody offered to buy me a new oven they wouldn't need a pair of gloves for christmas.

    Hi mandy,

I've only ever had a fan oven so I can't really add anything useful but these older threads might help:

    Fan oven

    Fan assisted oven and baking

    Fan oven or normal oven

  • They're excellent.

One thing I can't cook in my fan oven (and oddly my late Mother found the same thing when she got a fan oven) meringues just don't seem to work.

    Everything else is a breeze.

If you whack the oven up to full heat then turn it off as soon as you put the meringues in turn off the oven and leave them in overnight, they will come out okay. Slightly chewy rather than dry and crumbly, but I prefer them like that anyway. :) Not actually tried meringues but I have a biscuit recipe which is basically meringues with chocolate chips and chopped pecans mixed in and they come out fine in the fan oven although I have never tried them in a normal one to compare.

    Okay dense moment coming up!

How do I know if I have a fan oven? I think I do. It's electric and there is a noise like a fan which stays for ages after it's turned off. My mum says it is one, but I just don't know.

It came with the house when I bought it. I always just cook things at the temp I'm told to for the amount of time each recipe says.
