my step-son's band is in a regional final and wants approx 50 teeshirts printed but for as little cost as possible as he will be giving them away

You/He could try Iron on Transfers, most stationary stores, Rymans, will have material you can print onto (maybe even handwritten for a more grungy unique feel) and then a box of Primark t-shirts? Once you have the print just iron it onto the t-shirts0
