I find this thread very confusing as there are contradiction and incorrect assertions, and the actual question appears to be buried deep within the thread; correct me if I am wrong, but the question and answer is disguised as a complex matter, but is actually really simple, as follows:

Q: What is the cost of a return journey from Doncaster to York, travelling outward around 8am and returning the same day, with a 16-25 Railcard?

A:  £14.25 for an Anytime Day Return (SDR). This fare is fully flexible, valid for a day return journey at any time, on any company's trains.

If the question relates to the T&Cs of a 16-25 Railcard, they can be found here:
...A £12 minimum fare applies for journeys starting between 04.30-09.59 Monday to Friday excluding Advance Fares. This minimum fare does not apply on public holidays or throughout July and August. For full details of minimum fares, please ask at your local staffed station and some National Rail-licensed Travel Agents....

14.25 is greater than the 12.00 minimum, so no issue there!

    I are buses and option
As the journey appears to be Doncaster to York, a distance of over 40 miles by road (32.5 by rail), we are looking at a 20 minute train journey (at 125mph) versus an approx 2 1/2 hour bus journey (via Selby), so I think we can conclusively say the bus is not an option. :D

If she gets a part time job at the railway company who runs that route then she will be able to travel from free between those stations and also earn some money.

Thank you. My question was because didn't understand what the '"£12 minimum fare" meant. I didn't know if this applied to the morning train only so I'd need to pay £12 (min) one way and then buy a separate ticket for the return leg using  the 16-25 rail card with the full discount available  or if it applied to the whole return journey.

I give more detail later because I'm then trying to work out if it would be better to buy a season ticket with the 16-17 saver I currently have extending it till July.

I'm trying to work out which gamble will be better.

Something else to throw into the mix, the railcard could also be used on journeys to other locations (not sure if she'd be doing train journeys to other places) - the season ticket is point to point.

Extremely unlikely she'd be going anywhere before college ends early July especially since things aren't going to open up 'fully' until May/June at the earliest.

In addition she has a card that entitles her to student fares within our county by public transport  that is valid until the end of July, so could use that to go shopping etc outside of our town if she kept within the county.

At the point she did want to go further afield by train, I'd just buy the 16-25  railcard then.

Not confusing at all? OPs question has already been answered?
