Hi am about to buy a car from England and bring it back to Northern Ireland- Belfast . Is there any import or extra duty payable ? I can’t seem to get a straight answer some sites reference a levy of 20% on top of the Cost price and the nigov site has no information! Just don’t want to buy a car and get hit with a big bill ! Any help is much appreciated thanks

Prior to Brexit: no.
Now...? Irish revenue rules seem to imply there is a difference after January, but that doesn't tell you what rules the UK applies. The NI protocol appears to imply that declarations and tariffs may be applicable, depending on the rules of origin.
The UK gov website, irritatingly, says "The Brexit transition period has ended and new rules on importing vehicles now apply. This page is currently out of date." without doing anything useful, like pointing to an update.

After 1st of January, vat had to be paid on a car brought from England, but this was soon abandoned and back dated. I’ve been told people are back buying English cars again.

The taxes apply if you want to sell it on into the south collected by Eire1 -

The Irish site says stuff about "for a car from NI, check that it had the right certificates and duty when it was imported, or you will have to do it" (paraphrase).
The implication being that they expect cars to be dealt with at the sea border. So I can understand if some sellers in GB are making arrangements/allowances, even if the govt has not yet enforced that bit (with typical Brexit "clarity").0 -

This is a NI site (UK ) not Irish republic ie Eire
NO TAXES!

Carrickfergus... the revenue site was talking about buying a car from NI. It implied that duty should have been paid when the car came to NI.
The govt webpage doesn't help either - saying that there is no tax/duty, but headed by a banner saying that due to Brexit it's out of date!
I suspect that there should be customs certificates and charges when a car comes to NI because of the sea border, cars being one of the things at risk of entering the EU market. But it's probably not being applied at the moment (because the govt is about as "ready for Brexit" as you might expect of that shower of liars).1 -
it is not being applied and I doubt it will.
The main reason a car can't be sold on easily into Eire, it has to be taxed and registered there. This include VRT tax and VAT on top0 -
I just have a strong fear that Brexit is going to push up the used car prices over here, in the mid/long term. Early signs will be things like reported, with FUD about what is and isn't allowed. The Brexit equivalent of "free UK delivery! (not you)".0
