Two Mortgage products, one fixed rate coming to an end

I took out a 5 year fixed rate with Halifax 3 years ago. 2 years we moved house and I took out additional borrowing on a 2 year fixed rate which is now coming to an end and I'm looking to put this on a new deal. My plan was to fix this for 2 more years so I can then look at a full range of lenders to remortage on the best rate at the Time.
Halifax will only offer me a 3 or 5 year rate meaning if I ever want to change lenders I will always have an ERC to pay. I tried complaining to Halifax but they weren't interested. I feel that by them restricting their products in this way is unfairly locking me into staying with Halifax.
Has anyone had any experience with a similar situation and would escalating this to the Financial Ombudsman be worthwhile?
