I would usually suggest trying the commute during normal rush hour to get an idea of the actual time though with so many people still working from home it might be hard to tell what normal is.

A few years ago I started a new job 40 miles away almost all of it dual carriageways. During the day I could do it in 50 minutes but at peak times it was taking up to 90 minutes. That's 3 hours a day stuck in the car and I was going through a tank of petrol every 3 days. It was driving me potty and the company didn't like you working from home so I handed in my notice at the end of the first month as the job wasn't worth time, hassle or cost of getting there.

Have you heard the nick name for the Aston Expressway? IMHO suits it very well.

Getting there for 8 should avoid a reasonable amount of rush hour.
It will help but you will still catch it.

Pre COVID I used to have to drive from Brum to Leeds every so often. Without fail there was always major congestion, either standing or VERY slow moving traffic, on the southbound M42 as you approached the M6, and that was not much after 7am, which realistically that's the only practical route the OP can use. Not long after that the OP will then have the joys of Spaghetti Junction and the Aston Expressway.

Come on, you can't leave us hanging. What is it (nothing obvious on google)?
