48 hour week

I signed the opt-out nearly 2 years ago to do 54 hours a week.    Considering dropping to 48 hours a week- 4  12 hour shifts.
Can I be sacked for this?  Secondly- my Dr suggested I reduce my hours.  Thirdly- Hate the place right now

    You have so many threads regarding your employer, are you actively looking for employment elsewhere as that is what will help you. 
    I would focus on that and leave. 
    Reducing your hours will prolong it, you don't like management, you don't like their cctv, etc. Working reduced hours will not change that.
    Hopefully the next place won't be as bad for you.

    The working time directive says you shouldnt have to work more than 48 hours, there is a reason for this as its bad for your health. People should consider this when they opt out, but they dont they just see pound signs. 
    I am in a running battle with my partner at the moment she hates her job, but insists in putting in 50-60 hrs per week (and doesnt get paid for it) and then is constantly stressed out by the job!
    Legally i cant see that you could be dismissed for dropping your hours when you are working more than the working time directive, as opting out and doing more hours is meant to be a voluntary thing. However i'm not a legal expert (i'm sure someone on here is)

    Being sacked for exercising a statutory right to limit weekly hours to 48 (on average) would be legally unfair.  Proving it is another thing.
  • I've worked with people who've talked about dropping to 48 hours (would be a reduction of about 10-12 hours over the course of the week). Their reasoning being they're sick of finishing late and sick of the weekly hours.
    I point out that they can go ahead with that, but expect the company to start them late in the day and make them work all the weekends going in order to hit their 48 hours.
    Now do they really want to drop to 48 hours?
    Funnily, nobody has gone ahead with it. Wonder why.
