I love it... I just hate spending money I don't have to.. I begrudge paying the fat overpaid office dwellers money which can be better spent on making my home nice for the children and providing extra little things for them.

There does just always seem to be something to save up for too..

I was also brought up to be frugal too.. making things stretch is a way of life rather than a lifestyle choice now. It comes with fun challenges though.. :D

Not true :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: You are younger than me and I refuse to be called old.

I will admit though that people of our generation are more likely to be OS, as brought up that way, war babies, rationing, Grandmothers that could stretch a penny till it met itself coming back :rotfl:

Love your blog Ilona and often think you are someone I would love to meet.

In our early years of having a young family, mortgage, car payments etc we had to watch the pennies, some months the overdraft fed us coming up to pay day. In recent years I have been promoted at work, kids have grown up, and an inheritance a few years ago gave us cash for some home improvements and to save for our planned early retirement. Since OH died suddenly in December I find myself mortgage free, with healthy bank accounts, and although some days I find myself out and spending money just to pass the time I still bargain hunt because I feel a great satisfaction knowing I haven't bought something at twice the price! Old habits die hard.....

  • Apart from mortgage we aren't in any debt so it has never been about that. I am a sahm and for us to be able to afford that I have to be old style. It also goes with the life we are trying to lead - a more simple, less commercial way of living.

I don't think I could ever give it up now, nothing has ever given me so much satisfaction:)

When I joined this site we were in a lot of debt.......so I followed everyone's tips and managed to clear our debts and clear the mortgage,we now have savings and are off to buy a new VW camper van in 3 weeks time.Family think we are poor, because we buy reduced food and shop in charity shops and won't pay a penny more than we have to.little do they know.Being OS is addictive.
  • That's not being poor HAPPYDAYS that's being rich in common sense and experience and knowing when to buy at full price and when not to is a very big chunk of that!!! Super that you have cleared your debts, super that you have cleared your mortgage, super that you have savings and very, very super that you can now, because of your OS skills buy your Camper Van, what's not to like? Keep on doing what you're doing, because you're doing it right!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.

Came here to learn how to feed my family when going through bankruptcy and repossession. Grew up and spent my 20's as far away from OS as you can get. Gradually over the years I've picked up hints, tips and way of life but it's more than that... I now have the OS attitude and it's that that makes you an Oldstyler, I think. I am proud to say I am now an Oldstyler and even though I'm still learning I'll never go back.
