childcare vouchers -missold?

I accrued childcare vouchers via salary sacrifice over a number of years, for using with my two daughters. At the time I took them out I was under the impression I would be able to use them for any Ofsted regulated after school clubs, school trips, sports clubs etc, however other than the childminder, I never found anywhere that accepted them. As a result I have nearly £2000 of surplus vouchers that I can't spend. My youngest will be 15 in January and so the vouchers will be lost. I feel that I was totally misled about the scheme, as the implication was that schools, as well as many other places, accepted them - neither our primary nor high school did.
I originally was with Fideliti but from what I remember my workplace (NHS) changed to Edenred. Fideliti don't refund and work have told me to try to get a refund from Edenred.
I just wonder - has anyone actually been able to use their vouchers or has it just been a con all along?

I've used vouchers over the years from both YouAtWork and Edenred - from what I remember the rules/correspondence were clear on checking with your service provider before committing, particularly as it was an annual commitment. We had no issue with nurseries/school breakfast clubs but 3 x childminders we checked with wouldn't accept and I'm aware a number of sports clubs didn't. I've got to be honest I've never heard of them being used for school trips so maybe we missed a trick.
I can't imagine a refund being forthcoming nor the tax implications if you did manage one2
