Sick Line Extension Question

Hi there,

I have been off work for a period of time, and part of my return to work plan with HR is for me to use a combination of sickness absence and annual leave for the remainder of my time before moving on to a new post. My current sick line runs out on 22nd. The plan will require this to be extended by three days before I commence annual leave. Can anyone advise if sick lines can be extended by three days? Is this possible? Or does it have to be a minimum period of time, e.g. 7 days for an extension?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

I've never heard of a sick line, is this the same as a fit note?  Sorry I didn't want to answer if sick lines were something I didn't know about.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Good general explanation here of how one practice handles it: https://southfieldmedicalpractice.scot.nhs.uk/clinics-and-services/sickline-advice/

Your local GP practice should be able to tell you if they charge.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I suspect the OP is in Scotland as the term 'line' for 'note' is quite common.  The OP needs to speak to their GP surgery but I would expect the medical certificate/sick note/sick line/ fit note to be for a minimum of 7 days.  That doesn't mean the OP can't return to work sooner than that with the agreement of the employer.
  • I'm at a loss to understand why the OP would be concerned if the sick line/note  was extended for seven days rather than three.  Isn't the start of the plan with HR simply delayed by four days?

    What am I missing?
