Working full time and claiming furlough

Are you allowed to work full time and claim furlough (both different employers)? If so would you be taxed more?

You can't "claim" furlough, it is upto your employer whether they wish to furlough you (within the relevant rules).
But the basic principle is yes, you may well be able to work elsewhere whilst furloughed.
If you earn more you will pay more tax. That's life.0 -
Isn’t the point of furlough to help with bills so earning approximately 180% of your pay from both jobs the same as stealing from the government? As 80% is government funded. The nhs workers must feel like mugs how is this fair?2

It isn't, but give some an inch and they will grab a yard.rachelu7 said:Isn’t the point of furlough to help with bills so earning approximately 180% of your pay from both jobs the same as stealing from the government? A chap on our street has been openly boasting about how he is 'raking it in'. Getting 80% furlough pay, and working full time as a supermarket home delivery driver.
Legal, but immoral.1 -
Seems like people are rubbing there hands getting an extra grand or so from the government funding. Should be either receive furlough from your employer or get a job elsewhere and get full income pay and no furlough. Sad part is a lot of people won’t be returning to the job when they reopen as they are only staying there to get the extra money

Before this pandemic there was nothing stopping a person working every waking hour with different employers to make as much money as possible as long as they did not fall foul of any rules by a company on working a second or third job etc.
The whole point of furlough was to keep that link between employee and employer rather than just letting everything burn to the ground so to speak and have millions land on JSA and many businesses closed for good without a fighting chance of survival. So if someone can't do their job because the government and the employer have deemed it so and put on furlough then why should that person not have the sense to find more work and earn extra money.
Everyone during this pandemic have been dealt a different set of cards on how they have to navigate financially and mentally through this crazy time. Some have had it easier than others which is in fact what life is like in general. I tend to stay away from playing the moral card to somehow stop people doing what they want within the boundaries of what our democratic laws allow. I'd rather go after our electable officials who are suppose to make the best decisions that ensure we have a functioning society that helps the most people as possible.

I’ve been furloughed for most of the last 12 months and my wife was made redundant (same employer) when the furlough scheme was not yet extended beyond October and they would not re employ her or cancel the redundancy process due to the cost of the process.I’m just about to pick up some extra work for 6 weeks, I don’t feel wrong morally for having 2 incomes for that period as our household income is massively down for the past year already. If I had known a year ago how long I would be furloughed then I would’ve sorted a second job a long time ago.1

Furlough was introduced to avoid redundancies and having people laid off without pay.rachelu7 said:Isn’t the point of furlough to help with bills so earning approximately 180% of your pay from both jobs the same as stealing from the government? The government has no money, so you can't steal from it; it's the kindly taxpayer who is dubbing up for everything. Given that furlough pay is taxable, as are any earnings someone has on top, it's not quite the blind theft you seem to think.
There are many people on 80% pay who are struggling to pay the bills and would dearly love the chance of a second job, but stand no chance of getting one - and will probably lose their current job when furlough support is withdrawn and the real rafts of redundancies start kicking in.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0 -
It's allowed. The furlough scheme was set up in a hurry, that's why it's administered by employers and there's no cross-checking to restrict it for people with multiple jobs.Keep in mind though that if you're furloughed you could be asked to return to work at short notice. If you take another job with clashing fixed hours then you could put yourself in a position where you have to break one or other of your employment contracts. No problem if either job is zero hours contract though.

Plenty of positive reasons to not sit around all day taking furlough, good for mental health, good for physical health etc.
Its also good for long term planning of your own financesDon't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
80% but up to a max of, IIRC, £25k. If you were on more than that & had, eg, the mortgage to match you might need that delivery job to make ends meetSilvertabby said:
