help needed with cancelled wedding due to covid restrictions

To keep it short my original wedding date was 3rd October 2020 this was moved to April 30th 2021. The venue charged no extra extra to change date or new wedding cost.good news!
Upon the new restrictions advised on the 22nd February 2021 weddings can only take place with 30, this was no good to myself and my partner our numbers are 60 day/100 night we took the painful decision to cancel the wedding altogether, due to the fact we want to start a family and do not want to delay anymore. The venue advised in writing via email "if the government say weddings can take place but there are restrictions which prevent your wedding going ahead as contractually planned then you would be entitled to a full refund"
Received an email on Friday 12th march to advise they have now received our cancellation letter and will proceed with refund, however we are no subject to -
"you are entitled to a full refund minus any administrative fees incurred by the venue in direct association with your wedding booking"
They have sent us a unique cancellation fee calculation which they total up numerous descriptions for at a cost of £897.50 although they have decided to cap the charges at the cost of our deposit £750.00.
We are both just totally gobsmacked that they feel it necessary to advise we would receive a full refund, then come up with a plan to keep our deposit, i just find it so unfair they get to make this rule up and i feel i cant argue it out with them as I'm scared ill get no money back (the are refund other monies paid minus this £750). We do have insurance but its not worth the paper its written on and they wont help with anything regards Covid.,i understand the venue must have lost so much money we feel for them, i just think they should not be entitled to keep our deposit.
Any advice welcome
Many thanks
Sarah

What did they say when you reminded them that you're due a full refund?0

hiya
I haven't replied to them about it, was just shocked and thought at least im getting some money back but the more i think about it the more i think they are wrong. just wanted to see if people thought the same?0 -
Hi, we're in a similar position. It's extremely frustrating and there seems to be very little help and support for the consumers.
We're in the same position with our supplier where they are retaining the deposit, however, you could argue they are in breach of contract as they're unable to offer the service they contractually agreed to with you. Despite them not been at fault, the restrictions are imposed on them as a venue not you. I haven't entered this argument as it seems a lot of effort and stress, would also need legal advise which would cost more money and would most likely end up in a small claims court.
We're having issues with suppliers who want to charge additional cancellation fees in excess of the initial deposit based on the terms dictated in their contracts. Not sure if you have additional suppliers or have experienced anything similar?0
