Dolly's Emergency Fund

So this Dolly has just bought her first ever flat and now it is time to be a proper adult and get myself an emergency fund.

My aim is to have an EF of £8,000 and tbh this will take me a long time to get there but it's good to have a goal.

I have added my first £100 so I have saved 1.25% of my goal so far which is teeny toaty but it's a start.

£100/£8,000

Hi Dolly *waves from another recent FTB* and welcome to this section.

Your EF target seems good, have you managed to find an account paying some interest? While most are not much at the moment, those few pennies do help.

  • Hello @MovingForwards - oh exciting another FTB!

I'm not sure what the rate is on the account I'm using but its defo something I need to look at, any extra they want to add will help!

Atrixa is another recent FTB too, she will be along at some point this weekend.

I've had a quick glance over some of your other diaries, turns out I'm also older and love the name of your car!

A lot have banks have regular savers, I've a few leftover from when I was buying but also managed to open up some other accounts since moving to get ok interest. It really is worth a look around.

One bit of advice is get a few basic things for your home, but live in it for at least 6 months before making big purchases or plans. It's easy to get caught up with ideas and rush into them. Living in the property, getting a good feel for how it is and functions, how natural daylight and things work, means a less risk of making an expensive mistake; paint is cheap. It was 7 months after moving in I finally purchased the right sofa / arm chair.

A few of us ladies are currently decorating and doing bits to our homes, if you want to pick up hints and tips.

When you move in, you'll have to tell us all about your flat 😃

  • I've bought a few bits already but trying not to go too crazy till I get in there.

The sofa I bought from the sellers for £200 so that was a bargain, they've only had it just over a year and at least I know it fits  :D

I'll be looking for all the hint and tips and I'll keep you all posted along the way.

I do have a DFW and a MFW diary too just to keep myself accountable.

Oh I love a spreadsheet! Just worked on mine there to add the %'s to my savings and the £3,000 repayments to my mum.

Pots, pans, bedding and things are fine. Teflon and prestige products are good and last. It's definitely worth holding out for sales, looking at FB local selling sites, gumtree, charity shops and even checking if friends and family have things they no longer use.

Try not to spread yourself too thin with all the diaries, it can become difficult posting different things in them. I gave up on my MFW one and stuck here. You are doing well paying your mom back.

Have you set your spreadsheet up for bills and outgoings too?

Don't forget to find your local takeaway and get a bottle of your favourite for your first night in!

  • I've got my sofa and I've ordered my TV unit, coffee table and a side table.

Other bits I've got in are just small appliances, kitchen stuff, bedding, curtains, framed prints and a few wee teddies for the kids room.

Majority of it I've got on sale or paid for with gift cards donated to me from my mum and the rest I'll get when I'm in.

It's going to be a work in progress and I am so excited about it!

All sounds great! Do tell us about colours, shapes and other things. We do enjoy reading and imagining what people are up to.

Not long now until you're in, arranging and rearranging, smiling from ear to ear because it's yours!

Do I detect a hint of you being up here too? Or is the use of 'wee teddies' throwing me off 😃

Hello Dolly, brilliant news. I haven't seen you for ages and you have bought a  flat. OMG  brilliant. Hooray. Well done you on a great buy with the sofa and getting lots of nice things.  Furnishing it is fun.  Learn from my mistakes i bought everything new and kicked myself when i realised that Mark*tplace existed as nice things were much cheaper. lol. We will cheer you on, I am so pleased to see you. I am planning to pay off mortgage and also save for retirement.
