I admit, that I did think that if it happens again I might press 1 and, when I get through to someone live, say that I am a serving police officer, this number has been reported as a scam number, that they are being recorded and their phone line is being traced - just to see how much I can get out before they put the phone down.
Thanks for all the tips Guys. I definitely think we'll look into buying one of those BT call blocker phones.

Why not press 1, string them along and have a laugh?
I believe there are versions of this scam where pressing the requested number will put you onto a premium rate number.

Rarely but stringing them along is a waste of time, won't bother them in the slightest, confirms to them that they have a "live"  number and might increase the number/variety of scam calls as the automated dialing/message is zero effort.

Being a little older, I am very fortunate to have someone call and check on me every day.

He is from India and is very concerned about my washing machine warranty.

Don't worry, if that doesn't work out, you always have all those millions from your Nigerian relative, just contact them by email. 😉

We have a BT call blocker phone - it can be used on any network (we're on Virgin). Basically, if the number isn't in your contacts, then the caller will hear a message asking them to identify themselves. The phone then rings, tells me its an announced call and who its from, I can then decide if I want to answer or not. If I don't answer, then it goes to the answerphone. If the caller doesn't respond to the phone message, then it doesn't ring my end and the call is terminated. Automated calls don't answer,  so they don't get through. When I pick up the handset, I can see on the screen how many calls have been blocked and the number that they called from. Some days it can be 6 or 7. Best £50 I spent!
I wish there was something like this for mobiles. I don't have a landline so something like this for mobile would be awesome.

Topaz, if you see this, I just want to say thank you loads for the tip. We've now got a BT call blocker phone too. It's fab. Does so many things that I was surprised when I found I couldn't use it to make toast. It's very close to being the best £50 I've spent, only beaten by a bottle of Archers and LOTS of chocolate.

    love it!

I get the "maintenance department" ones quite a lot, I like to let them talk then keep asking them to repeat things such as who they said the company is. I've also started asking, when they tell me they send out the engineers, where they are as I was sat in all the previous day waiting for them. Keeps me amused anyway

I don't know if anyone has had any "Election Canvassing" by phone, leading up to the elections?  I got a call from a "no caller ID", stating that he was calling on behalf of the Conservative Party and asked me if I would be voting later (this was yesterday morning).  I just said that I was busy at work and he went away then.

Seems they are resorting to phones now, as they can't knock on peoples' doors.
