I was just reading another thread and there was a recipe on it for bread pudding but made with butter instead of suet.I have always used suet but it got me wondering does anyone use the butter recipe and if so is it better than the suet one?

Most suets contain trans/hydrogenated fats which is why many are using butter instead in recipes. I don't like bread pudding, so can't comment. One day I might be more organised...........

I always use butter, I find the suet recipies a bit stodgy & it's a bit lighter with butter I think.

I posted this receipe a few months ago.
Bread Pudding
8 oz bread ( I usually whiz this in the food processor)
1/2 pint water
fresh orange juice (I use Value orange)
6 oz mixed fruit
3 oz sugar
2 oz margarine/butter (melted)
1 egg
2 - 3 heaped tablespoons mixed spice
Pour the water and orange juice over the breadcrumbs.
After a few minutes add the mixed spice, fruit, sugar, egg and melted butter and mix together.
Pour into a greased dish and cook on about 150* for about 45 mins (or when cooked)
Sprinkle with sugar when the pudding comes out of the oven and is hot. What goes around - comes around

Is bread pudding difference from Bread and Butter pudding? I'm a bit confused here.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0

Bread and butter pudding(also known as Newmarket pudding) is sliced bread, buttered and baked in a custard. It is eaten as a dessert.
Bread pudding is made from leftover/stale breadcrumbs, sugar, dried fruit and fat. There's usually egg in too, but I find it works without. It can be served with custard hot for dessert or sliced and eaten cold like a cake. It is much more solid than bread and butter pudding.0 -
well thanks for all the useful replies.I think it will be butter in my recipe from now on

Now I know what each one is, its bread and butter pudding which I dislike, some breadpuddings I have had are nice, all were made with butter however.
Beef suet doesn't but many don't seem to use a butcher for suet and use 'packet vege suet' I think out of the packet ones only Atora light doesn't contain HVOs. Some butchers also don't do suet which I thought was weird, they only 'buy in' specific parts of the cow and don't get the kidneys with the fat around them. One day I might be more organised...........
